 What signs should I look for if I think someone is considering suicide?

  • makes threats, talks of, or jokes about dying
  • makes final arrangements, gives away possessions, says good-byes
  • is depressed and/or withdrawn
  • takes unnecessary risks
  • shows a change in behaviour, attitudes, or appearance
  • has attempted suicide in the past
  • withdraws from family and friends
  • expresses feelings of hopelessness and helplessness

 

If I think someone is considering suicide, how can I help?

  • ask if they have suicidal thoughts
  • try to listen without judgment
  • explore and support their feelings
  • encourage reaching out for help
  • don't keep suicide a secret
  • get help: never do it alone
