What signs should I look for if I think someone is considering suicide?
- makes threats, talks of, or jokes about dying
- makes final arrangements, gives away possessions, says good-byes
- is depressed and/or withdrawn
- takes unnecessary risks
- shows a change in behaviour, attitudes, or appearance
- has attempted suicide in the past
- withdraws from family and friends
- expresses feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
If I think someone is considering suicide, how can I help?
- ask if they have suicidal thoughts
- try to listen without judgment
- explore and support their feelings
- encourage reaching out for help
- don't keep suicide a secret
- get help: never do it alone
