Suicide Prevention
Suicide Awareness/Intervention Workshops
The Education and Training Program promotes professional workshops, seminars, and presentations on a variety of subjects. The Support Network offers two main kinds of suicide prevention workshops formats:
Suicide Awareness:
Covers general information on suicide and discusses how to help someone with suicidal thoughts. Workshop length varies from 1 to 2.5 hours. How to Help a Friend in Crisis is a suicide awareness presentation available to high school students. Phone (780) 482-0198 for more information.
Suicide Intervention:
These workshops are designed for those seeking more comprehensive training and experience helping someone with suicidal thoughts. These workshops are offered in one-day and two-day formats.
The 2-day Suicide Intervention Certification Training workshop fulfills the required specifications needed to be employed by Child & Family Services. The 1-day workshop meets the requirements for re-certification within 3 years of completing the 2-day course.
ACSW Continuing Competence: Both the 1-day and 2-day Suicide Intervention Training workshops count towards Category A credits for continuing competence requirements for Social Workers registered through the Alberta College of Social Workers.
One Day Suicide Intervention Workshops
The aim of this learning experience is to increase the understanding and knowledge of suicide for individuals who are in a helping relationship with people who might be at risk for suicide. Some factors that put people at risk for suicide include: experiencing significant losses, facing multiple stressors, isolation, and having few resources. Trainers will tailor the sessions to meet needs of any special areas of interest, depending on composition of the group.
Group Registration Policy: You may register a maximum of 8 individuals from one organization. Payment is due at the time of registration.
Note: If you are taking this workshop for your employment, please ensure this training fits the standards around training hours that you need. Registering in the one-day suicide intervention course is equiavalent to the refresher training format.
Two Day Suicide Intervention Workshops
The aim of this learning experience is to increase the understanding and knowledge of suicide for individuals who are in a helping relationship with people who might be at risk for suicide. This workshop fulfills the required specifications needed to be employed by Child & Family Services.
Group Registration Policy: You may register a maximum of 8 individuals from one organization per workshop.
Comparing the One and Two-Day Suicide Intervention Workshop Formats
If suicide intervention training is a requirement of your employment, please consult with your employer regarding the format required to meet your qualifications.
The one-day suicide intervention workshop format is a thorough introduction to suicide intervention and is recommended for those seeking to increase their knowledge of suicide prevention. It is also appropriate for those wishing to obtain recertification. Registering in the one-day suicide intervention course is equivalent to the refresher training format.
The two-day suicide intervention workshop is recommended for individuals working with at-risk populations where contact with individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts is highly probable. In addition to the material covered in the one-day format, the two-day suicide intervention format allows for:
- in-depth instruction on the principles of suicide intervention
- discussion of relevant suicide prevention issues (e.g., aboriginal suicide)
- opportunities for practical application of skills learned
Suicide Intervention Refresher Training
For whom: People who already have a certificate for suicide intervention training of 8 hours duration or longer
We are currently not offering this as a separate workshop. Taking the One-Day Suicide Intervention Training is the equivalent of Refresher Training.
