Distress Line FAQ

How many calls does the Distress Line average in one month?

There are approximately 1,500 callers to the Support Network's Distress Line every month. All are at some level of distress, and about 30% of them are in crisis.

What are some of the reasons people call the Distress Line?

Of the more than 13,000 calls to the Distress Line: 31% are related to suicide; 16% to relational problems; 8% to losses; 8% to violence (domestic and sexual assault); 9% to mental health concerns, and 14% to financial problems.

How does the Distress Line help?

It takes a well trained listener to bring a measure of calm, and establish what level of intervention is needed to stabilize what might otherwise be an explosive situation.

Clearly, in the majority of cases, it may be sufficient to establish that there are people who care, and there is somewhere a client can turn when feeling lonely, confused or angry.

Our history of networking and cooperation with other programs and agencies which can provide essential follow-up services, enables us to provide important links for those clients in need of long term help.
